The Knock Out

We just recently got back from a great two-part family vacation.  I call it “two-part” because we drove to Minnesota (1000 miles away!) and had a family reunion picnic with all my “Yankee” relatives.  Then we left the kids with my parents and flew to New York City where we met up with some friends  and had a grown up, adult only vacation!!  It was wonderful!  I didn’t have to worry about cutting up anyone else’s food but mine!  New York was fabulous- but I’ll leave that for another post.

What I want to share today, is the fun episode that we had BEFORE we left for NYC.  We have been very fortunate that our kids have not been very accident prone.  No broken bones or stitches- knock on wood.  However boys will be boys and my son and a cousin were sword fighting with foam swords and having a great time.  Then the boys switched to plastic bats, and somehow a bat accidentally hit my son in the mouth and broke off two permanent teeth!  One of them was broken off about half way down and the other at the gum line!  It was definitely an accident, my cousin felt terrible, and the situation could have easily been reversed.    But we still had to deal with broken teeth 1000 miles from home and my hubby and I were leaving in two days for NYC!

Luckily my brother and sister-in-law have a friend from high school who is a dentist.  So they called Dr. Bob to get his opinion on what to do.  Of course Dr. Bob was in his boat on the lake at the time- but he arranged to meet us that evening at 8.

First I have to say that Dr. Bob was wonderful.  I’m thinking about scheduling our vacations to MN twice a year around visits to him!  Secondly, my son has to be one of the best patients around.  He wasn’t scared and did everything he was asked to do.  I think I was more nervous than he was.

Dr. Bob was able to bond the teeth.  However the tooth that broke at the gum line, didn’t have much to bond to, so that one may not last very long.   Dr. Bob was also really worried about infection in that tooth.  So much in fact that he thought my son might need to have a root canal that week!  Fortunately everything turned out well while we were gone.  And so far the bonding has held up.  Now we just have to get thru the next 8-10 years until he stops growing to get permanent teeth.   I now have a better appreciation for mom’s with accident prone kiddos!
