Flip Flop Cake
I have to say, the best thing about this cake is that it’s actually two cakes! Guests had their choice of vanilla or chocolate cake. I wish I could claim that this cake idea was my own, but I have to give credit to Betty Crocker for inspiration.
I basically followed Betty’s instruction and used the same ingredients listed except I couldn’t find Fruit by the Foot, the store was out, so we improvised and used Yogos Fruit Rollersand Skittles.
While the cakes were baking, I made a flip flop template. After the cakes cooled, I centered the template over the cake and cut out around it. To insure the other flip flop cake was the same, I simply flipped the template over and used it on the other cake.
Both cakes cut out very well for me. The vanilla cake accepted the icing easily; however, I had a horrible time applying the first coat of icing on the chocolate cake. I ended up with a true crumb layer. As I was placing the cakes into the fridge, I was seriously considering Kroger for cupcakes!
After a few minutes in the fridge, the icing hardened up a bit and the second coat went on without a glitch. Talk about relief! At an angle, we cut the fruit roll into shorter strips and stuck them on (as shown), applied decorative icing along the edges and the girls helped push the Skittles into the sides. We found two silk flowers and stuck them in for the finishing touch.
Keeping with the theme, I found some flip flop candles at Hobby Lobby. I couldn’t have done better there! Blowing out the candles was slightly difficult due to the breeze outside…but she managed!
