Backyard Birthday Camp Out

This weekend we celebrated our son’s 10th birthday with a backyard camp out. His actual birthday isn’t until July, however we have found it to be much easier to have a party for friends the first weekend school’s out and a small family party on the actual date. This way he can pass his invitations out at school and most of the kids are still in town and haven’t left for vacations.

My husband bought a slip and slide for the kids to play on. It must have been the cheapest one in the store, because it didn’t even last a full hour before it ripped! Luckily it wasn’t a major rip and the boys continued to slide on it.

I thought it would be fun for the boys to roast hot dogs over the fire pit. But my son isn’t a fan of hot dogs, so we ordered pizza and boneless chicken wings instead. I bought a package of 12 root beers, 12 Sprites, and 24 Cokes. We were out of root beer and Sprite by 10:00pm! Those boys can put away the soft drinks!

Instead of cake and ice cream, we roasted marshmallows over the fire pit and made smores. Yummy! I think that was my favorite part of the party!! I found the neatest telescoping roasting sticks in the dollar aisle at Target. I also got nice little flashlights for party favors there. Target actually had several different camping items in the dollar aisle.

For breakfast we got 4 dozen donuts. After the boys had their fill, we only had 5 left! My goodness those boys ate a lot!

It was pretty hot Friday night, so the boys played Wii and Gamecube inside and slept in the game room instead of the tent. And they actually went to sleep relatively early- around midnight. I couldn’t believe it.

They all left around 9 yesterday morning and I think they had a really good time. I’m still finding dirty clothes that they left behind! BOYS! Gotta love ‘em!

  1. I’m having one of these parties in a few weeks for my son. thanks for the tip about telescoping sticks at Target… any other things you would have done differently?

  2. Target also had dollar “swiss army” knives. I’m not sure if they actually contained a knife or not. But they did have a flat head and phillips screwdriver and a pair of scissors. I wasn’t sure what the other parents would think about these, so I didn’t buy any.

I think the only thing I would have done differently, is to check my son’s room for stray clothes BEFORE the boys left!

I hope you have a fun camp out!
