“Up” Words
Today my daughter was telling me that a friend of her’s at school called a boy in their class a cry baby. I asked her how she thought this made him feel and she didn’t really respond. So I asked her how it would make HER feel if someone called her a name. She admitted that it wouldn’t be very nice. I explained that words can really hurt and that hurt can last a long time. I told her about a time when I was in middle school and a girl that I thought was sooo cool and popular called me a name. And how even now when I think about it; it doesn’t feel good. So I encouraged my daughter to practice using “Up” words. Words that build a person up and not tear them down.
After our conversation was over and I had time to think back on it, it made me wonder how many times I use “Up” words with those I love the most. You would think that the people that I cherish would receive only the best from me. But sadly that doesn’t always happen. So I’m going to try using “Up” words more often also. Hopefully my daughter will catch on too!
