House of Respect

I had a good mom moment this week. My son took a state mandated standardized test on Tuesday. I knew he was a little nervous about it, so when I packed his lunch that morning I wrote on his napkin, “Good Luck on the TAKS. You’ll do GREAT! Love, Mom and Dad”. I thought he might get a kick out of it. When he got home that afternoon and I was unpacking his lunch box, there was the napkin. He picked it up and showed it to my shyly and said, “I’m going to save this.” Wow! I think he got more than just a kick out of it! Today he is trying out for a school choir, so this morning when I packed his lunch He handed me the napkin and the pen.

In her book, “Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World,” Jill Rigby offers many ways to cultivate a house of respect. I love her first way- Pray together. Another way is to tell your children that you love to see their faces every morning. She also said to tuck notes in a lunchbox or a briefcase. I was teaching respect and I didn’t even know it! Some days it’s Great being a MOM!
